FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- JULY 6, 2012
INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group and Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL) are warning customers of a bill payment scam involving requests for personal information and mentions of a federal program that provides funds for utility payments. A number of customers of both utilities have reported a scam in which they are told that President Obama has authorized a new federal program or that "Obamacare" will pay utility bills.According to the Better Business Bureau, customers have been contacted in person and through fliers, social media and text messages with claims that President Obama is providing credits or applying payments to utility bills if customers provide social security and bank routing numbers. In return, customers are given invalid bank information that will supposedly pay their utility bills. In reality, there is no money, and customers may believe they have paid their bills when in fact they have not.Customers are reminded that they should never provide their Social Security numbers or other personal information to anyone contacting them by phone or in their homes unless they initiated the contact and are confident with whom they are speaking. If customers receive calls or visits from individuals claiming to represent the utility company and feel pressured to make payments or provide personal information, they should immediately call the customer service number provided on their utility bills or request to see the visitor's company-issued identification. All IPL and Citizen Gas employees carry company issued identification badges.More information about the scam is available at:
