There was music! There was free pizza! There were prizes! And
most importantly, there were free trees! Last Friday, April 28, Indianapolis
Power and Light Company (IPL) celebrated Arbor Day by hosting the annual Indy
Free Tree event outside of its headquarters on Monument Circle. IPL employees and community partners gave away 1,000 white
spruce trees during the event to support ongoing sustainability efforts in the Indianapolis
Additionally, IPL President and CEO Rafael Sanchez and City
of Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett addressed the crowd and recognized six
Indianapolis hotels that have pledged to participate in IPL’s Green Power Option,
which means that a specific percentage of their electricity will be generated
by wind, an eco-friendly generation resource.
Those who received trees are urged to read IPL’s Right
Tree, Right Place brochure before planting them. This brochure provides
tips on where to plant trees without interfering with utility lines. Also, be
sure to call 8.1.1, the national Call Before You Dig hotline, at least 48 hours
before digging a hole for your new tree. A representative will come to your property
and mark the location of underground utility lines for free.
