May is the greatest month in Indianapolis. From the 500 Festival Mini Marathon to the Indianapolis 500 and everything in between, Indianapolis is the place to be during the month of May. Just like the rest of the city, here at Indianapolis Power and Light Company (IPL), May is our busiest month for projects and events. Here’s a wrap-up of all the events that happened last month.

Day in the Parks – May 11

Despite the ominous forecast on May 11, nearly 400 IPL employees participated in the seventh annual IPL Day in the Parks service day at Brookside Park, with the help of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. and Indy Parks Foundation.

Throughout the day you could see linemen clearing trees, engineers mulching the playgrounds, customer service representatives planting flowers and accountants painting shelter houses. Executives, interns and everyone in between worked together with one common goal: revitalize these parks for Indianapolis residents to enjoy.

Day in the Parks is our most popular employee volunteer event. Instead of sitting at a booth or working at a convention, this event lets our people do hands-on projects and improve the Indianapolis community (and they get an awesome t-shirt for volunteering). Many of our employees live in Indianapolis, so in some cases, they are working to improve their own neighborhood parks.

In seven years, IPL employees have improved 29 parks. Indianapolis has 280 parks total, so we are just getting started. Only 251 more parks to go!

Safety Day – May 18

IPL and its parent company, AES, promote safety as our number one value. Each year, all AES sites host Safety Day for all employees. This year at IPL, Safety Day was held at Lucas Oil Stadium, promoting the theme “Safety: Take it Personally.” Former IndyCar driver Sarah Fisher presented a keynote address on she takes safety personally, and classes focused on safety, health and wellness. Yoga, firearm safety, linemen training and healthy eating were some of the classes offered this year.

The point of Safety Day is to teach our employees to be safe on and off the job. We want our employees to return home each night, and we want them to return to work the next day. Whether it’s a lineman climbing a pole to fix a line or a customer service representative driving to work in the morning, we want all employees to be safe at all times and take safety personally.

IPL 500 Festival Parade – May 27

For the twelfth year in a row, IPL was the title sponsor of the IPL 500 Festival Parade on May 27. The parade started in 1957, and IPL has had a float every single year of the parade since its inception.

Sponsoring the parade is important to IPL, because it falls under our giving area of economic development. It creates hundreds of jobs and brings in millions of dollars to Indianapolis each year. And, not to mention, it ranks among the top three parades in the country, alongside the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day and Tournament of Roses parades.

IPL won the Spirit Award for our float this year for corresponding with the parade’s theme, “Accelerate the American Spirit.”  We invited our employees who are veterans, our environmental team and a past and present basketball player from Crispus Attucks to ride on the float.
