Outage Resources

Update: Friday, November 29 at 9 a.m.

Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL) completed restoration of customers impacted by Wednesday's sustained high winds ahead of our goal of midnight Thursday night. Thank you again to our customers for your patience through this storm. And thank you to our people for your dedication to serving our customers!

Many customers will have repairs and clean up to do following the storm. Please keep the following safety information in mind as you inspect your property.

Trees and Debris Clean Up

If you are cleaning debris in your yard, please use extra caution and look for downed lines before you begin. If you see lines down, assume they are energized and call us at 317.261.8111. Keep away until crews can make the area safe.

As you inspect the condition of your property, please remember to check your trees as well. Many of the wind storm outages were caused by mature trees falling on power lines. Often, these trees are located outside our utility right-of-way for routine line clearance. We encourage property owners to look for signs of tree damage and consult an arborist or professional tree trimming company for recommendations.

Reminder, IPL crews do not clean up debris after emergency storm restoration. Our crews have two objectives: to correct unsafe conditions and to restore electricity to all customers as quickly and safely as possible. As they work to repair damage, crews may need to clear branches and trees to maintain safe conditions and restore service. Because of the urgent nature of this work, crews do not clean up after emergency trimming. Debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner. In these situations, the Department of Public Works, private trash collectors or a professional tree removal service can lend assistance and advice regarding cleanup and disposal of brush and debris.

IPL crews working Thanksgiving storm

Crews continue making progress, restoring customers following yesterday's sustained high winds. Approximately 650 customers are currently without power, from a total of 40,000 impacted. We'll continue work until all customers are restored.

Our goal is to have nearly all customers back on by tonight at midnight, although there may be a few individual customers out until tomorrow. We appreciate your patience as we have all hands on deck working to complete restoration.

Damaged Electrical Equipment

If the electrical equipment on your home or business is damaged, you may need an electrician to make repairs before electric service can be safely reconnected. IPL is responsible for installing and maintaining the service line, while property owners are responsible for the meter box, service entrance cable and masthead.

IPL will make every effort to reconnect service, however there are times when the damage is too extensive and you will need to contact a qualified electrician to make repairs. After repairs are complete, call us to schedule a time for reconnection.

We are thankful for our customers, community and people

Yesterday's wind storm may have amended Thanksgiving plans for some, but we are grateful to our customers for your patience as our people work diligently to complete restoration. We're also thankful for our IPL families who sacrifice time with loved ones and put our customers first when our community needs us. That's what we mean when we say we're Powering Community.

IPL is fully staffed today to restore power to customers following yesterday's wind storm. In total, approximately 40,000 customers were impacted. We currently have approximately 1,400 customers without power.

Our goal is to have nearly all customers restored by midnight tonight, although there may be a few customers with individual service issues whose outage could go into tomorrow morning.

Keeping our customers and our people safe during restoration is our top priority. Please follow these important outage safety reminders:
